What is Air Freight?

Air freight is the fastest and one of the most reliable methods for transporting goods globally via aircraft, though it is generally more expensive than sea or land transport. It is ideal for time-sensitive, high-value, or perishable items like pharmaceuticals, electronics, and live animals, and involves complex logistics including documentation, customs clearance, and specialized handling.

How the air freight process works

he entire air freight process is typically managed by a freight forwarder, who acts as an agent between you, the airline, and customs authorities.
  1. Booking and planning: You or your freight forwarder book space on an aircraft and prepare all the necessary documents, such as an air waybill, commercial invoice, and packing list.
  2. Origin handling: Your cargo is picked up, weighed, measured, and transported to a cargo terminal at the origin airport. Here, it undergoes security checks and inspections before being loaded onto the aircraft.
  3. Customs clearance: Before departure, international shipments go through customs clearance, which involves submitting required documents and meeting all legal requirements for export.
  4. Transport: The cargo is flown to the destination airport. For international shipments, it may be monitored during flight and transit.
  5. Arrival and final delivery: Upon arrival, the cargo is unloaded and transported to an import warehouse for final customs clearance. After clearance, it is delivered to the final recipient.

Types of air cargo

There are two main categories of air cargo:
  • General cargo: This includes everyday items that don’t require special handling, such as textiles, electronics, and other consumer goods.
  • Special cargo: This category is for goods that need special conditions or precautions due to their nature, weight, dimensions, or value. Examples include: Perishable items, Hazardous materials,
